MUSTAFA ÇETİNEL

Hi Everybody,

Lets talk today about a book that i just finished yesterday on the way to home. The book was in English, so i will write this comment in English. I hope, you would enjoy it and not have so much fun with my foreign language.

Whatever, this book has been suggested to me by my brother (Rahim) and i had this book since so long time in my library waiting for me to read. At the end, after i forgot most of my books in Frankfurt when i came to Brussels, i had to read this one.

Let me be honest with you. The book was really good. Especially the language that author used. I read lots of English books but this language was so different than the others. It was so easy to read and author was talking to us. He was telling us a story and i was just sitting next to him.

Now let me explain the story a little bit. Anansi is an American God refers to Spiders. There are gods for every animal shape and Anansi is just one of them. But he is different that others cos he is more clever. According to this book, the world is having it’s shape by songs and stories of American Gods. All the songs and stories were belonging to Tiger till Anansi tricked him and got them. Afterwards, since thousands of years, everybody tells Anansi stories, every sings Anansi songs.

One day, Anansi dies. One of his son, Fat Charlie finds out that he has a brother named Spider. And he can contact to him by telling to a spider that he wants to see his brother. Cos Spider has all the God powers…

One day, even though Charlie did not believe to this elderly story, he decided to ask a spider about his brother. And than everything starts. For the rest, you have to read the book.
But let me assure you that the book is really fantastic. It really worths to spend time on it.

Have fun with the book,

Regards,
Mustafa

This is also another of his books probably the second one I have read: Anansi Boys. I also realize that I have yet to write about this books in Turkish, well I will do it in later time.

Anansi Boys are also about old gods but not in a way that Gaiman’s book “American Gods” does. It’s mostly about Charles Nancy who is actually named by his father as “Fat Charlie” and his father being a god the name sticks. He complains about it all his life and most in the book and it is kind of funny considering that he is not fat at all.

In a way Fat Charlie (opps it sticks to my writing as well) same as Shadow of American Gods; they both are clueless about what’s really going on around them (in reference to the story of the book). He also has a brother who is completely different and opposite of him, Spider. Fat Charlie being a shy, less talkative and normal person learns about his father’s death and goes back to America (because he lives in England) to take care about the things that are need to be done about the funeral. On the other hand, the outgoing, cool brother Spider decides to live with Charlie and the fun starts. I also should add that (even I recognised it much later) the book’s heroes (the Anansi Boys) are actually black people (or maybe I should say African-American to be more politically correct) and Gaiman does not mention it in the book not even once but you understand it anyway.

The book is cool. When you think about it all of Gaiman’s books are cool, so this one is no different and me mentioning it is kind of lame. But his way of telling the story, his perceptions about normal people that live normal lives and the smart way he puts them into his books including this one is amazing. As a reader you start to realize this as soon as the book starts and you can always get the feeling that this might actually be true even you know that it is a fiction and a production of of a great mind. I believe this is also one of the reasons that I like most about Neil Gaiman and his work. He can easily convice you with his words and/or his drawings (he is also the creator of infamous Sandman series) and he does it so good.

After writing some articles about books in Turkish language I have decided also to write in English. Mostly I am a lazy person and sometimes I think that right now in these days my writing skills in English is not as what it used to be, so probably some couple of book articles would be quite lame including this one. I will try anyway…

When I started writing to kitaplog.net it was in Turkish and its because Turkish is my native language. I am also aware that a book site does not get much (even small) attention from Turkish book readers and the reason for that is mainly there are not many people who actually read in Turkey. I think that having a small number of visitors also gives me a chance to write the way I like. This articles may even help me to keep my English writing skills to get rustier than ever. On the other hand when I thought about which book I should write about Neil Gaiman was the first author that I came up. Maybe its because I like his books a lot or maybe his “writing” is so good I don’t know. Then, I decided to write about a book that I haven’t written in the site before, so here is the American Gods.

The book is about both mythologycal creatures (Gods, genies and so) and modern life creatures (Internet, media, mass transportation). Gaiman, I believe takes into consideration that the gods are live on the belief of their believer and as America being the new world; the old Gods who came to America with their believers when they came to America as immigrants and such. In the time between the first days of new America and today those old gods loose power since their believers are lost and new gods starts to emerge taking powers from the believers of Internet, Media, Pop music. In the foreground a guy named Shadow plays quite a crucial role being the bodyguard of a strange person who calls himself as Mr. Wednesday. Of all the book, Shadow is the most clueless person find out a completely hidden and new world that actually has gods, goblins, witches and everything that is expected to be only in bed time stories. He even dies and come back from death, still being mostly the clueless guy who starts to understand things in kind of a slow way.

I would not continue about how the story reveals itself. Its for us readers job to read a good book, enjoy it, dream about what the book tells. But I should say that this was the first book of Gaiman’s I have read and it had quite an effect on me. If you ask me Gaiman is a genius about almost anything that an author should have: Imagination (which he has quite a lot and more), his way with words (his sentences themselves are quite the beauty), the fiction of the events in the book (he is mostly the most unexpected in all his works) and also the sincerity you can find in his books. When all gets together it is not easy not to admire him.

If you haven’t had a Neil Gaiman book until now, I strongly recommend you to have one.

When I started this site, it was in Turkish and that’s because Turkish is my native language. I am also aware that a book site does not get much (even small) attention from anyone, anywhere. It’s more likely people would want to watch the movie instead of reading. It doesn’t matter that much anyway. I think having a small number of visitors also gives me a chance to write the way I like (not trying to be unrespectful here I must add). This articles may even help me to prevent my English writing skills to get rustier even more.

When I thought about which book I should write about, “Neil Gaiman” was the first author that came up to my mind.

1. Fragile Things
2. Smoke and Mirrors
3. Neverwhere

Bir nevi “You had me at hello!” vakası.

Smoke and Mirrors
